Writing an essay can be challenging whether it’s an exposition or an argumentative piece. According to Google, an essay is a short piece of writing on a particular subject. It is the battle between the pen and the mind. On this battlefield, some writers struggle with being objective, they have difficulty understanding the targeted audience and are pressured by competition.

One reason why some students find writing an essay difficult is that they struggle with being objective. We all have opinions and we can be very bias at times when it comes to writing based on our own assumptions and beliefs. However, when writing an essay, some students don’t know that they need to be objective rather than subjective. When corrected for this mistake, it can be hard to stay on track with being objective. This calls for expert help and a lot of practice to rid the habit. Until that happens, some students will still struggle with being objective.
Another reason why some students find writing an essay difficult is that they have difficulty understanding the targeted audience. Knowing the targeted audience of a particular essay is extremely important, failure to know this may result in unanswered questions. For example, if you are writing to a group of lawyers, no need to explain certain terms but if you are talking to students about lawyers there is a need for an explanation of terms. According to Aim’s Community College, one way to solve this issue is to “incorporate the audience into the thesis statement”. For example, “First-time college students (audience) need to know the proper way to study for a final exam”. There are many other ways to know the targeted audience, this is left for the student to research or they may continue to have difficulty understanding the targeted audience.
Finally, the other reason why some students find writing an essay difficult is that they are pressured by competition. They write for an external reward or a passing grade. Students are also pressured when given a deadline, resulting from that, they rush their work. When writing under pressure, they remember all rules, active, not passive voices, be objective, not subjective, know who the audience is and so on. Another reason why students may be pressured is that they are intimidated by their classmates who might excel in that area. Neil Fleming in his V.A.R.K. strategies explained that people learn by visual, aural, reading and writing and kinesthetic. In other words, he means people learn differently, some by seeing, hearing, reading and writing and based on their own experience. Not all students are good at essays and since the school system is bent one way, they become pressured by competition.
Some students find writing an essay difficult when they struggle with being objective, understanding the targeted audience and when pressured by competition. These errors may be overcome by being subjective, incorporating the audience into the thesis to make it easier and relaxing. No one is the same, we all learn differently, therefore, writing essays challenges some more than others.
